What is Degenerative Disc Disease?

DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a condition of the body caused by deterioration of the intervertebral discs in the spine. Intervertebral discs have a center that contains a gel-like substance which gives it a soft, shock absorbing characteristic. These intervertebral discs act as cushions between the vertebrae in your spine, absorbing the impact of the body's daily activities

WHAT DOES DDD MEAN FOR MY BODY?

Typically, under the age of 30, the intervertebral discs are viscoelastic, allowing the discs to act as cushions for the vertebrae. With age, the discs may become dehydrated, causing the discs to become thinner, decreasing their viscoelasticity and hence their mechanical properties. The change in the discs can cause a change in the position of the vertebrae and the ligaments that connect them causing back pain or numbness.

DDD CAN IMPEDE YOUR LIFESTYLE

DDD is one of the most common causes of back and neck pain, and can occur anywhere in the spine. It is primarily related to the normal aging process, but it may also occur as a result of spinal trauma, infection, or direct injury to the disc. Heredity and physical fitness may also play a part in the process

  • Pain that worsens with certain types of activity such as bending, lifting and twisting

  • Pain that feels better when walking, changing positions or lying down

  • Inability to raise the foot at the ankle (foot drop)

Cervical DDD

  • Pain, numbness or tingling in the neck, often radiating into the arms and/or hands

  • Pain that worsens with certain types of activity such as bending, lifting and twisting

  • Pain that feels better when walking, changing positions or lying down

  • Loss of strength in the hands

Treatment Options

Non-operative Treatment
Artificial Disc Replacement
Surgical Intervention

If you’ve been suffering from neck or back pain, total disc replacement may be a viable treatment option for you. Consult your doctor for more information about degenerative disc disease, and what treatment options are best for you. Visit our technology page to learn more about artificial disc replacement.
